Visibility and Product Quality are the keys to maintaining a competitive edge in the market. How can a company successfully achieve those objectives while also outsourcing its manufacturing?
– Anil Gupta
Anil Gupta’s pointed out that outsourcing manufacturing to lower-cost countries leads to new demands imposed on the quality management processes of the outsourcing companies- especially if these processes are spreadsheet-based manual or a PC-based point solution currently used by them. Outsourcing results in longer distribution cartage and delivery time. If these products have a defective percentage, the company has to scrap these defects at the point of destination, weeks after it has been shipped out by the manufacturer. If a company has to scrap products due to quality issues, the company experiences shortages and disruption in order fulfillments. He suggested that company’s quality engineers must have a clear and timely visibility into supplier’s process capability and quality data so that they could proactively minimise quality issues at the supplier’s plant. Anil Gupta suggested web-based quality systems which provide a quality management that include inspection, audits, CAPA, document control, supplier dashboards and scorecards, and cost recovery.
From our experiences, a web-based system is already in place in most suppliers we work with. However, without a locally based supplier quality engineers team inside the supplier’s plant acting as a bridge interacting and communicating with the supplier’s teams, the data collection will be less effective and problems resolution are often delayed.

What do you need most from a contracted supplier? Continuous production data feedback from your supplier? A quality engineer stationed inside the production plant to verify the data and process control?
You need both to get the best from your supplier and minimize unpleasant surprises. www.amrepinspect.com have the people for this and is being used by major US corporations to do quality assurance and quality control in China on their suppliers.
